Sri Lanka Tamil Media Alliance (SLTMA) held a commemorative lecture “Media Freedom in Post ~ War Sri Lanka” on 15th of May 2011 at Colombo Thamizh Sangam to pay tribute to Late Aiyathurai Nadesan and Late Sivaram Dharmeratnam (Taraki).

Head of political science and public policy, University of Colombo Dr.S.I.Keetha Poncalan delivered the key note address. President of Federation of Media Employees Trade Union (FMETU) Dharmasri Lankapeli too addressed the gathering.

Aiyathurai Nadesan was shot dead on 31st of May 2004 in Batticaloa district. He was a columnist for Virakesari ~ pioneer Tamil language newspaper for more than 20 years.

Sivaram Dharmeratnam, who was popularly known as Taraki was kidnapped by four men and found dead on 28th of April 2005. Activist, actor and journalist late Richard De Zoysa encouraged Sivaram to write. Sivaram Dharmeratnam became a journalist in 1988.

Handful of professional senior journalists left the country and is in exile. Most of them have already sought asylum along with their families in respective countries. Some of them are still struggling to find jobs as journalists since they are not proficient enough in English language.

Very few ethical journalists decided to be in Sri Lanka and continue their career as journalists.
